From Old Right to Cold War Right

My piece on Barry Goldwater and Bill Buckley, from the Fall 2008 Intercollegiate Review is now on-line at ISI’s web journal, First Principles.

For my take on the Old Right leaning of WFB Jr’s father, Will Buckley, see my review of a few months back of Reid Buckley’s An American Family. And for more on the transformation of American conservatism, see Lynn Robinson’s review of Justin Raimondo’s Reclaiming the American Right. Be sure to check out Anthony Gregory’s review of Raimondo’s book in the new issue of The American Conservative (with Sarah Palin on the cover), too.

You can read Gregory’s review right now, along with the rest of the issue and all of TAC’s archives, by signing up for a free, three-month trial subscription, which includes instant access to our electronic edition and archives.

My issue of IR came in the mail last week and I read your article. It was very good. I never got misty over Goldwater though considering that he was more of a libertarian and I have to admit I’ve never been comfortable with Bill Buckley’s embrace of the free market either. I’m more of a Russell Kirk traditionalist/Robert Nisbet communitarian/Hilaire Belloc distributist.
