Thompson is a paper tiger. He's actually ambiguous on abortion -- he always campaigned as pro-choice -- and remember that James Dobson, who evidently considers himself the Protestant pope, said that Thompson isn't a "real Christian." In order for Thompson to be a threat to Ghouliani, he would have to take significant numbers away from Romney and/or McCain. And even then, the primary schedule still favors Ghouliani. Romney isn't about to cede the movement conservative vote to Thompson, and he has the money to fight it out. This Thompson bubble is going to burst sooner rather than later.

Haven't heard any word of a Swift Boating of Ghouliani in the cards as yet; I expect it will be very difficult for any Republican to take shots at him on terrorism or corruption. They'll keep hitting him with abortion, but even the most anti-abortion Republicans like killing hajis more than saving babies, which is why I think Ghouliani wins.

Any rumblings of a Swift Boat style campaign against Giuliani? Something like "NY Firefighters for Truth?" There were many missteps and miscalculations leading up to and on 9/11 on the part of Giuliani. If they were exposed by a group with moral authority, Giuliani's campaign would go down like the Hindenburg.

Payne has a point about Thompson... his appeal is that he most resembles what many folks remember about Ronald Reagan. He doesn't have the same substance, but the veneer is almost there.

I agree with your conclusion, but I think you overestimate all the front runners. Look, Fred Thompson will be the nominee: Hates abortion; loves killin' hajis. I love Ron Paul, but morons love a guy that acts like he drives a pickup and was on Law and Order.
