It makes me regret all the more not taking the initiative to meet Ralph while I was his editor at <i>The American Conservative</i>. He was a class act. Interestingly, when I talked to him on the phone, he didn't seem hard of hearing at all. The first time I called him, I spoke up as loudly as I could, thinking of the condition of my late grandfather's hearing when he was Ralph's age. But Ralph could hear me just fine at a normal volume. I felt pretty foolish for shouting down the phone at him! Thanks for bringing the letter to my attention.
