I disagree with John Lowell. REAL Texans have a way of describing guys like Bush---"All hat and no horse", as I've heard it. Bush is all swagger, not a "real cowboy", but "Cowboy Drag". The kind of joke we used to make when we were kids---You can see from my outfit that I am a cowboy--if you get an outfit you can be a cowboy too.".

Scotch Irish, independent, and populist in his sentiments, Webb represents more of the true free-living Southerner in the tradition of Davy Crockett or Daniel Boone then Bush. Bush is not culturally a true "Texan"...read Michael Lind's book, "Made In Texas"... Culturally, Bush is "born with a silver spoon in his mouth", Establishment Banking family--socially he's more "Animal House" then he is anything traditionally "Southern".

The only association Bush has with the "South" is that he represents the interests of the "Plantation South"...the southern aristocracy, whose idea of "freedom" was "free trade", but cheap contract labor --- orginally indentured whites and black slaves. Mineral extraction and agriculture made profitable with a permanent serf class, were the Southern aristocrat's idea of the American Dream. Opposing this tradition was of course, the tradition of free labor---the "Populist" South. Texas---and the South was the stronghold of the People's Party, and elected more Populist Sentors, Congressmen and Governors then anywhere.

If ever there were doubts that Bush was a schlemeil this episode disproves them en masse. Can you imagine asking the father of a serviceman and a known opponent of the war how his son is without expecting a response along the lines that Webb offered? And then to bristle when that response is articulated? Was Bush slapping Webb on the back when he made the inquiry? Probably, I'd guess.

We've had two Texans as presidents in my lifetime, one whose social instincts managed levels typical of those of a young chimpanzee, and the other those of a somewhat older chimpanzee doing a Mussolini impression.
